Rye Lake Lower Campus unveils new playgrounds
New play space offers inclusive fun for students with unique needs
Steel-gray November skies couldn't steal an ounce of shine from the unveiling of new, inclusive playgrounds for students at Rye Lake Lower Campus.
District and school officials came together with students to cut a ceremonial ribbon and give the new swings and other attractions a spin. The Lower Campus house programs for students with multiple disabilities (MD) and autism spectrum disorders (AIIM). The new facilities ensure the highest levels of accessibility—and fun—for students with these unique needs. The MD Program relocated here earlier this year.
"We are thrilled that our brand-new inclusive playground is officially open," Principal Jonathan Remeny said. "It was gratifying to see our school community come together for a joyful ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate this exciting milestone for the Rye Lake Lower Campus."
The playground represents months of planning, collaboration, and dedication, Mr. Remeny said. "It has come to life as a vibrant space where children of all abilities can play, learn, explore, and grow together," he added. "The inclusive design ensures that every student has access to meaningful play experiences, with adaptive equipment, sensory-friendly features, and opportunities for cooperative play and physical development."
Deputy Superintendent/COO Dr. Brendan Lyons, Director of Special Services Jessica Walker, Assistant Director Dr. Alexandria Connally, Assistant Principal Maureen Salka and Special Education PTA President Carolyn Laskaj joined Mr. Remeny in celebrating the unveiling. This is the second playground opening of the school year for one of SWBOCES' Special Services programs, the last occurring earlier this month at Transfiguration School in Tarrytown.
Special thanks go out to the planning committee for their tireless work in helping plan and develop the playground. Members include Ms. Walker, Ms. Laskaj, Francesca Fernandez, Phyllis Rizzi, Claribel Cruz-Cocco, Linda Liebman, Maureen Carroll and Julie Zimmermann.
There were smiles, cheers, and a strong sense of community pride as our students became the very first to enjoy the new play space. Mr. Remeny said he and his team look forward to seeing it bring joy, movement, and connection to students each day.
