Parents and BOCES officials were among the visitors to St. Matthew’s School for student presentations of experiments and all they’ve learned at the 2nd Annual Science Fair.
This classroom-centered study of multiple topics included interactive exhibits on the science behind volcanoes, composting and recycling, and not one but two unique presentations on space travel, no doubt inspired by the recent Artemis mission around the moon.
Ms. Cookes’ students compared the explosive nature of volcanoes, crafting realistic mountains and testing whether Mentos and soda created a bigger blast than vinegar and baking soda. George showed off his and his classmates’ impressive craftwork, and Pedro explained how volcanoes contributed to animal extinctions.
Ms. Donaghy’s class showed off how manmade space missions circle the moon and return to earth with a splash, literally! Students demonstrated how the capsules parachute to a safe, water landing.
A second space-based exhibit showed off rockets crafted by students as well as a diorama of the solar system. A recycling exhibit featured plastic cup planters and photos of students’ recycling efforts in the surrounding White Plains community.
Parents and students were able to visit each other’s displays, learning from one another’s experiments, and sharing their learning with their visitors. Well done, St. Matthew’s!
