parents smile as student shows off his craft

SWBOCES students and staff at Rochambeau School celebrated Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a “Luau Out.”

Parents were invited to join the fun as each class hosted a different activity, from frame decorating and shell jewelry crafting to bookmarks and wooden paintings. Each class rotated so everyone could participate in each activity. Hawaiian shirts, bandanas and colorful leis were everywhere, along with island music for inspiration.

Playing off the theme of “Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together,” the Luau-inspired celebration focused on unity, togetherness, and community.

“We are excited to be able to promote equity, community and to bring us all together in this way with fun, engaging activities that really bring out our students’ talents,” Assistant Principal Maria Almeida said.

“I love these events. They’re so fun,” said one parent. “They’re so creative. We get to help with friends and get to do all kinds of creative arts and crafts. It’s a great time.”
