Southern Westchester BOCES at St. Matthew’s School celebrated five graduates whose determination, growth and kindness left a lasting impression on classmates and staff.
As family members looked on proudly and fellow students cheered, the five marched in and took their seats and listened as teachers reflected on their time at the White Plains-based program. Principal Diana Dinzey called it a day for celebration, gratitude and hope.
“I want to thank you for joining us today and your constant support of our programs,” she told those gathered. She also thanked her team “for seeing possibility in every student you encounter.”
The room was decked with balloons and a red carpet as district officials, including Assistant Superintendent James Gratto, Director of Special Services Jessica Walker, and Assistant Director Dr. Alexandria Connally attended.
“We want you as a community to know that this moment is yours,” Ms. Dinzey said. “Through every challenge, every achievement, every appointment, every early morning, you have stood by these adults and encouraged their potential.”
A musical slideshow highlighted scenes from classrooms and community work sites, depicting the joy and determination of the graduates’ shared journey. Music Teacher Andrew Ruoti led a chorus of graduates and other students in performances of “I’m On Top of the World” and “Unstoppable.”
The ceremony also featured the presentation of the Bob Newman Award, named in memory of a former student. Each graduate was called up and a medal placed around their neck in recognition of the honor.
Teachers reflected on each student, sharing stories of resilience, creativity, and growth.
“You are a hardworking student who gives his best in everything he does,” Teacher Maggie Donaghy said of graduate Justin Grant. Of fellow graduate Christopher Jackson, Ms. Donaghy said he has discovered what he can achieve and learned that success is, in part, “about the people who supported you along the way.”
Teacher Aide Yanick Chevalier told graduate John Marsigliano that he will be missed. “We are very proud of you and wish you success in all you do,” Ms. Chevalier said.
Graduate Kimberly Martinez-Lopez was also feted by Ms. Donaghy. “Kim, you are something special,” she said, calling her kind, caring and thoughtful. “Her gentle spirit and willingness to help others make her someone others want to be around.”
Teaching Assistant Marie Emile recalled how graduate Yaretsi Orozco got the nickname “Boss Lady” after taking a new student under her wing and guiding her through the school day. Yaretsi could be counted on to remind staff when it was lunch time or the class period was ending.
“Go forth and make a positive difference,” Ms. Emile said. “Show the world you can. I wish you all success.”
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates, after which the graduates turned their tassels from right to left, marking the completion of an important milestone.
“Please know we are your family, and you are always welcome,” Ms. Dinzey told the graduates. “Today we celebrate you and congratulate you.”
