'Guess Who' game at Irvington promotes inclusivity and understanding

The TSP MS/HS Program at Irvington High School has found a creative and fun way to promote inclusivity and a deeper understanding of the members of the school community.

The Guess Who project invites staff and students to submit a baby photograph, a childhood photograph or a Bit-emoji of their likeness. Each person also fills out a questionnaire that includes questions for participants to ask family members as well as questions for them to answer about themselves. Based on the responses, each participant creates a paragraph or two with clues to their identities.

This is where it gets really fun. Every day or so, a new picture and QR code are posted on the hallway bulletin board and displayed on the Tru-touch screen at the start of English class. Staff and students then scan the QR which takes them to a Google Form with the bio of the person pictured. The form prompts students to write their own name and their best guess of the name of the person pictured. Throughout the day, staff and students ask questions of their community members to help them narrow down their guess based on matching up facts in the person’s bio.

Once all guesses have been made, the name of the person in the picture is revealed with a pie chart displaying the various guesses and each of their percentages. "So far, this has proven to be a fun way to build community and to get to know each other a little better," said Principal Alberta Grant-Johnson.

The best part, Ms. Johnson said, is overhearing students in the hallway share their guesses and debating about who the person in the picture is. She added that students are also excited to see the pie chart indicating the results and the percentages of each guessed name.
