Students in Southern Westchester BOCES’ Special Services programs at Irvington High School have been collecting toys and games for children in need as part of an annual Toys for Tots drive.

A collection point in Teacher Rose Schmidt’s classroom was crafted by Art Teacher Claire Ballantyne and has been filling up with donated items since Thanksgiving. The toys were picked up on Dec. 16 for delivery

Toys for Tots is run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, which distributes toys to children in need.

“This is a wonderful cause for our school community to support,” Principal Alberta Grant-Johnson said. “By participating, we’re able to impart notions of civic responsibility and the ability we have to make a difference for others. These are valuable lessons for our students to learn, and they really like helping make the holidays brighter for others.”

This is also Spirit Week for SWBOCES students and staff at Irvington. Daily themes include Pajama Day, Crazy Hat/Hair Day, Mismatch Day, Holiday Colors, and Dress in your Best Holiday Clothes.

The names of students who participate each day will be entered into a daily raffle with snacks awarded as prizes. Students are also organizing a holiday party, which will include fun activities for all, including Karaoke.
