Middle schoolers at Irvington move up, ready to take on high school

Seven students lauded by principal for their respect, consideration and caring

The Southern Westchester BOCES Special Services programs in Irvington celebrated not only the accomplishments but the educational journeys of seven eighth-graders who are moving up to high school in the fall.

The ceremony was held at the Irvington High School location on Friday, June 6. Principal Alberta Grant-Johnson called it a special day to pause, reflect, and celebrate. She cited a sense of pride and optimism at the social and emotional growth that signify the students' readiness to embrace the expectations of high school.

Beyond academic success, she said, they modeled respect, consideration and caring toward peers and staff during their time at Irvington. She called those “building blocks of a truly meaningful life.”

“It is my sincerest hope, as you embark on this next part of your educational journey, that you achieve every success imaginable and access all the skills necessary to lead wonderfully happy and productive lives. We have every faith in your ability to shine brightly,” Principal Grant-Johnson said.

She also thanked families who attended the ceremony for their support and encouragement of their children, saying the celebration was as much theirs as their child’s.

Following her remarks, teachers were asked to say a few words about each student.
