Rye Lake Lower campus celebrates graduate's special day
A singular achievement: Graduate is in a class by herself
Graduation Day was a one of a kind experience for Amber Rose Castillo. Surrounded by loved ones and cheered on by educators and peers, she was the sole graduate this June from the AIIM program at Rye Lake Lower Campus.
The Decagon was bedecked with pink and white ballons. There cupcakes, cookies and other refreshments. And then there was Amber Rose, wearing her cap and gown and the focus of a small sea of smiling faces.
"Today we celebrate your journey of growth, academically, socially and personally" Amber's teacher, Tiffany Kittrell, said. "You've made incredible strides in communication this year, expressing your needs, sharing your feelings and connecting with your parents and teachers."
Ms. Kittrell also talked about Amber's growth in vocational and daily living skills, how she has learned to complete tasks as part of a team or individually. She honed these skills in the campus's garden and its print shop as well is its life skills apartment. She has also gone on class trips out into the community.
"Amber, we'll miss your infectious smile, your spontaneous and contagious laugh and your extensive collection of Pop It toys," she said. "As you step into the next chapter of your life, there will be new challenges. But I want you to remember you have all of the tools to succeed. We are so proud of you and we will miss you a great deal. Continue to bloom, our Amber Rose."
Principal Julia Dolan congratulated Amber and her family on reaching this remarkable milestone. She advised them to pause a moment, take a breath and appreciate all she'd accomplished.
"Life is a series of changes, and while certain chapters can bring moments of excitement and uncertainty," Ms. Dolan said, "we want you to know that our love and support will continue to be with you every step of the way."
