St. Matthew’s School students and staff celebrated the conclusion of Black History Month with a Soul Food Luncheon on Feb. 29.

The Luther Hall dining room was decorated with a variety of Black History Month information about historical Black figures.

An array of authentic cultural cuisine was provided by students and staff members. As part of their classroom lessons, students planned recipes, shopped at the community’s local Shoprite supermarket and followed their recipes to create the dish they chose for the luncheon.

Students had an enjoyable time, many wearing black, red and green to commemorate the occasion.

All month, students celebrated Black History in a variety of ways, according to their ability. They learned about and gathered information about the subject leading up to the culminating celebration.

“This is an important time to recognize and a rich opportunity for instruction,” Principal Leslie Handler said. “Thanks to the delicious contributions from our team, we punctuated the learning experience by sharing various traditional dishes and enjoying one another’s company.”
