Tappan Hill Teacher Aides Attend Communication Training Event

Training EventTeacher aides play a vital role in helping students with special needs reach their full potential, and effective communication is key to building positive relationships and creating a supportive learning environment. To that end, SWBOCES conducts several professional learning opportunities for special education teacher aides throughout the year.

On February 13, teacher aides from Tappan  Hill School attended one of three training sessions offered by SWBOCES Center for Professional Learning & Curriculum Support. The session, titled Communication: The Key to Adult Relationships, was led by Tracy Tyler, Supervisor of Literacy & Learning.

"Effective communication is the foundation of positive relationships and successful learning experiences,” said Ms. Tyler. “Our teacher aides have a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of students, and strong communication skills are essential to realizing that impact.”

During the session, participants examined and analyzed their personal communication style, learned their strengths and limitations, and developed strategies for understanding their own and others' styles and collaboration skills. From connecting candy to working style to selecting quotes that best resonated with them, the training event was filled with interactive sessions and practical exercises designed to equip teacher aides with the tools needed to effectively communicate with students, parents, and colleagues.

"At Tappan Hill, teacher aides play a crucial role in helping our students reach their full potential, and effective communication is key to making that happen,” said Principal Phyllis Rizzi. “I am thrilled to see SWBOCES providing this valuable training opportunity and am confident that our teacher aides will come away from the event better equipped to support our students and make a positive  difference in their lives."

The training series will continue with two additional sessions, one concentrating on mindfulness techniques and the other will focus on fostering student independence. The sessions will be held at the SWBOCES Rye Lake and Valhalla campuses, respectively.
